Creating your own Prayer Candles can be a fun and easy way to “Keep the Magic Alive” on your altar. I like to use novena candles to make my own, depending on what the theme or mantra I am working with at the time. As Caroline W. Casey says, we only truly possess the power of an insight when we give it expression. Moving that insight out of your head and into the world goes a long way in actually integrating the information into your life, so give it a whirl.
1. Where to buy a candle. Novena or prayer candles can be purchased at most drug stores, large grocery chains, or at your local Mexican market. You also buy them online, but they are so cheap ($1.50 or less) and readily available, it might not be worth it to purchase online unless you need to buy a ton of them. (You can also buy fancier models with scented candles as well.)
2. Choosing your candle. Prayer candles come in all colors and sizes. Some even
have different scents. Pick one that feels good to you or you are most attracted to, depending on the theme or mantra you are working with. Many novena candles have images of saints, angels, Mother Mary, etc. Usually, these are lightly-adhered stickers and can be easily removed.
3. Cut out images. Pick images based on your theme or mantra. Let yourself choose images that you feel attracted too, versus images that “make sense”. The soul speaks in symbols and we don’t always know why certain images want to be used. (Read more about that process here.) You can also write your prayers/mantra onto the candle.
4. Attach images. Now it’s time to glue your images to the glass. I use a simple grammar-school glue stick, but if you are attaching larger, heftier items than paper, you may want to use a glue gun. Use your best judgment.
5. Sparkle it up. After gluing your images onto the glass, you may want to decorate your candle to really sparkle it up. You can use paint, glitter, fabric, trim, balls, crystals, small doodads, etc. There really is no limit. However, the glass does get hot, so I would get too crazy near the top of the glass. Again, use your best judgment. (optional step)
6. Adding magical flavor. Sometimes I sprinkle in flower essences or small crystals onto/into the top of the candle before “lighting her up.” I don’t have any hard or fast rules here, but there are lots of places on the internet that make suggestions on what flower essences & crystals are helpful for what you are working with. Never put anything flammable into your candle wax. Again, use your best judgment. (optional step)
7. Candle Placement. Place the candle on your altar or in a place that you will see it every day. Use this as a reminder for yourself and a beacon to benevolent forces that you are ready to receive help in all it’s forms - for the good of all and harm of none!
Enjoy the process!

I love this post. I have 2 white novena candles and I thought they were looking a bit bland the other day. I am in the process of creating my meditation room and altar. This is a great idea for me to do to draw on my crafty energy. Thank you for the great ideas!!
A great post. I love making my own prayer candle, it makes the whole energy sparkle even more since it’s imbued with my essence. One of my favorite ones I made was dedicated to Unicorns to help me with some personal issues I was going through.
i have to say i think the lighting of the prayer candles is the most beautiful thing i have even seen. thank you so much for explaining the tradition.
