Happy Summer Solstice!

Happy Summer Solstice! Today is the longest day of the year and brings the shortest night. In magic, summer is associated with the direction of the South, the element of fire, energy, spirit, creativity, inspiration, action, the Sun, fiery colors, creatures of the South, heat, the phoenix and Solar Lion. We honor the Goddess as Mother and lay hands on the Earth in gratitude and as a reminder of where we come from. Today we beat the drum, soak in the Sun and celebrate the power of fire – the Sun, the Earth’s core, and the Fire that burns within each one of us. Tonight, we light the bonfire!

Summer Solstice Altar 2012

Summer Solstice Seasonal Altar: Last year, my husband, daughter Addie and I made Suns to string together a Solar Banner for our Summer Altar on the mantle. The idea was/is to keep it simple and let the whole family play. This year we hung the solar banner over the dining room altar and we (Addie and I) brainstormed about what felt like summer… what was hot, exciting, inspirational? What things/activities felt like summer? Hot peppers was our main theme, so we strung vintage pepper seed envelopes over the mantle, hung a painting that reminded us of the Sun (by Jessica Martin), Sun Flowers from our backstreet garden, sand from Maui’s Big Beach and Little Beach, as well as some from New Zealand (we are magic-festing a beach vacation)… you get the picture. Here are someĀ More Ideas about celebrating the Summer Solstice and honoring Summer.

Our Summer Altar from 2011

The Sun
by Mary Oliver

Have you ever seen
in your life
more wonderful

than the way the sun,
every evening,
relaxed and easy,
floats toward the horizon

and into the clouds or the hills,
or the rumpled sea,
and is gone–
and how it slides again

out of the blackness,
every morning,
on the other side of the world,
like a red flower

streaming upward on its heavenly oils,
say, on a morning in early summer,
at its perfect imperial distance–
and have you ever felt for anything
such wild love–
do you think there is anywhere, in any language,
a word billowing enough
for the pleasure

that fills you,
as the sun
reaches out,
as it warms you

as you stand there,
or have you too
turned from this world–

or have you too
gone crazy
for power,
for things?

  1. Thank you Heather for keeping the fires burning through every day of the year!
You’re so inspiring~ I love seeing the different altars you and yours create. I’m off to clear my old one and re-create to celebrate el sol (which will NOT be ignored these days!) Kisses, Karin
