February starts off with the celebration of the Irish goddess Brigid and the fire festival of Imbolc – literally meaning ‘in the belly’ of the Mother (life is stirring underground.) Here marks the early beginning of spring – February 2nd – and the midpoint between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. This is the time when the Great Mother becomes a Maiden once again, after giving birth on the Winter Solstice. The word February comes from the word ‘Februa’, meaning cleansing or purification, so the rituals associated with this time are ones of cleaning, shaking out the rugs, de-cluttering, cleaning out the closets, the pantries, and taking stock for what you will need in the spring. (Yes, more cleaning! Dont’ be afraid to treat yourself to a professional house cleaner!)
TIP + Honor your Sacred Fire: Brigid is the goddess of FIRE – creative fire, fertility, poetry, birth, healing and smithcraft. Gather together 9 white candles or tea lights and place them on your altar with an image of the Goddess, along with greenery and early blooms. Beginning at sundown on Imbolc Eve (February 1,) bless each candle with a clear intention of what you are ready for. When you are ready, leap over the candles to honor your commitment. Then place each lighted candle in a window around your house (or choose a room.) Allow them to continue burning until sunrise. Make sure they are away from curtains and well protected – safety first!
